DIY Maintenance

Keeping up with regular HVAC maintenance is key to making sure your system runs smoothly all year long. Let’s break down the steps between those you can do yourself, and those you should trust to a professional.

First off, changing the air filter is probably the most important maintenance task. You can definitely do this one yourself every 1-3 months. Just swap out that dirty filter for a clean one – it’ll keep the air flowing freely and your system running efficiently.

Professional Maintenance

Every 6 months, you should get your thermostat calibrated. This is key to managing your system the right way. If the thermostat is off, it can be tricky to notice, and it can really impact how well your AC or heater works. This is a job for pro.

Once a year, clean both the indoor and outdoor coils. This keeps that heat transfer process working at its best. It’s a job best left to the pros since they have the right equipment.

Every 1-2 years, you’ll need a technician to come check and refill the refrigerant if needed. Dealing with refrigerant is super technical and requires special recovery tools, so definitely don’t try this one yourself!

Look at the ductwork annually too and fix any leaks or blockages. This keeps the air flowing properly and prevents major problems down the line. You could do this one yourself, but it’s tricky and can cause a lot of problems if not done right.

Don’t forget to oil that blower motor every 6 months to a year. This is not a DIY task.

Clear out the condensate drain once a year as well. This stops leaks and mold buildup. This doesn’t require special tools. However, like checking the ductwork, if it is not done properly and regularly, it will cause serious problems.

And at least once a year, get a full professional tune-up, especially before the big usage seasons. Our pros will do a thorough inspection and catch anything that needs attention.

As you can see, you can handle a few of these maintenance tasks on your own, but it’s best to have a trusted HVAC company come in and do the more complex stuff. Following this routine will help your system last longer and keep your home comfortable all year round.
